Mining locomotive batteries
First National Battery is the only local battery manufacturer that uses state-of-the-art spine casting equipment in order to produce low antimony (1.4% Sb) Positive Plates.
First National Battery makes use of lower specific gravity acid to ensure less corrosion and longer life. These batteries also comply with worldwide DIN specifications, meaning our locomotive batteries can be used in many international markets.
Benefits of Low Antimony Positive Plates
- Less frequent topping up required
- Lower maintenance
- Reduced operating cost
- Lower risk of overcharge during first stage charge
- Increased service life
Cell construction and features
Positive Plate
The tubular plate construction incorporates antimonial lead alloy spines in complete contact with active material, which is retained by an outer gauntlet. This enables the electrolyte to penetrate freely, ensuring a high power output per unit volume.
Negative plate
The negative plate is of a highly porous paste on an alloy grid. This complements the positive plate construction, providing a balanced performance and superior life.
Separators
All positive plates are automatically sleeved (the separator is wrapped around the plate). Sleeves replace individual separators with the following benefits:
- No missing separators
- Ensures alignment of plates and separators
- Eliminates the possibility of shorts circuits and mossing
- Extended life
Mud Trap
Prevents possible shorting between plates due to active material shedding during the life of the cell.
Container and Lid
The lid is heat-sealed to the container ensuring a homogeneous bond. This is vital to mechanical strength and safety.
Top up Level Indicator
Two ribs on the separator guard serve both as level indicators, and to strengthen the guard.

Perfect Seal ® Bolt-on Connector
The bolt-on connector facilitates easy cell replacement. It is acid resistant, totally enclosed terminal post, maximum safety. It has the following features:
- A corrosion resistant stainless steel bolt
- A threaded brass insert to maximise terminal connector conductivity
- A polypropylene pressure bushing seated on a rubber O-ring, locked in place by a polycarbonate ring.
- Injection moulded polypropylene to eliminate acid leaks
The benefits of the Santoprene® Connectors include the following:
- Easy and simple to connect
- Made of thermoplastic rubber
- Acid resistant
- Abrasion resistant
- Fatigue resistant
- Easy access for voltage checking
- More flexible than PVC cable
- Exceptional moulding bond
- Built in ‘O’ rings
